An Open Letter to Miami Shores residents

As a proud resident of the Village of Miami Shores, I know that our community is special and has a uniqueness that makes our Village a home. I love the Shores, and I appreciate all the hard work and commitment that helped create the community that I know and love. I also appreciate that we have more work to do to ensure that the Village we love delivers on its promises to its residents.

With respect for what built our community and excitement for the opportunities ahead, I am running to serve you on the Miami Shores Village Council.

Raised by a single mom in Miami-Dade and a product of our public school system, I learned at a young age the importance of public service and community involvement. After graduating from MAST Academy, I moved to Tallahassee and attended the Florida State University on a service-based scholarship. Before I started my own public affairs business, I served the Florida House of Representatives as communications director and policy advisor to then State Rep. and Leader Dan Gelber during his two-year leadership term.

My husband Carlos and our two Maltese pup love this community and being active members of our Village has been so rewarding. This why I am so excited about the journey ahead. In 2015, we helped Mayor Glinn’s campaign, and again his subsequent 2017 race, as well as being part of a number of public policy discussions and community events impacting the Village. In addition to our volunteer work with the Mayor’s annual Gala committee, Carlos and I are part of the St. Rose of Lima church community.

As a husband, homeowner and small business owner, I am committed to making Miami Shores a safe, vibrant, and prosperous community, and keeping the collaboration our Council has seen in recent years.

Election Day is April 9th and I hope to earn your trust and vote in this important election. I look forward to meeting you at any of the community events and candidate forums over the next few weeks, and I will be knocking on doors to meet with voters like you.

In service, I am,

Christian Ulvert

A Promising Downtown

The Village of Miami Shores is an incredible place to raise a family, with recreational options for our families and tree-lined, residential neighborhoods that are second to none. This is why we must continue the work engaged by Mayor Glinn on delivering a promising downtown that attracts more neighborhood businesses and restaurants for Villagers to enjoy. As your councilmember, I will bring together our residents and stakeholders so our Council and the community can continue to chart a path forward together that embraces a common vision for a Strong Downtown.

Strengthening Public Safety

Strengthening public safety for all our residents is something that our Village Council must continue to work on. I believe we must focus our efforts on cutting-edge practices and to make technology investments so we can continue to provide the safest possible environment for Village residents and visitors.

Ethical & Experienced Leadership

As Miami Shores continues to engage on key issues, we must stay focused on ethical and experienced leadership. I am proud to have the full support of Mayor Mac Glinn and will proudly to continue to embrace issues and the vision he has embarked on for the Village. Our community faces similar challenges as many throughout Miami-Dade, I am eager to put my public policy experience to work to ensure our environmental policies are advanced, we are at the forefront of sea level rise and climate change, and partner with state leaders to draw down resources to invest in our aging infrastructure. We are a donor community, and it’s time Miami Shores increases its fair share of resources, so we can properly plan for tomorrow.

A Vision for Miami Shores

We all moved to Miami Shores because of what it is today: a beautiful city of tree-lined streets, with a strong sense of community, and close to the most vibrant parts of South Florida, and with an incredible variety of recreational and educational opportunities available to our families of the highest quality. As your councilman, I will listen closely to our residents for ways that our Village can even better serve our diverse and dynamic community and stay focused on looking for opportunities that make Miami Shores a stronger place to live. We are all one community, with one common goal: to make Miami Shores the best possible home for all.

Enhancing Our Schools in the Shores

During my time working in the Florida Legislature, I focused on education policy and ways we can help lift up our public schools. In Miami Shores, we have the unique opportunity through Doctor’s Charter, the city-run public school, to tackle educational policy. I am excited and eager to work with the Doctor’s Charter leadership team, board and parents to find ways to continue to elevate the school and achieve its full potential. I also want to find sensible solutions to bring more investments to Miami Shores Elementary as I am proud proponent of public schools and want to see my kids one day be a product of our local school system.

Meet Christian

Christian Ulvert is a lifelong resident of Miami-Dade and today is proud to call Miami Shores home, where he lives with his husband, Carlos and two Maltese pups. A product of Miami-Dade’s public school system, Christian learned at a young age the importance of public service and community involvement.

Raised by a single mom. Christian appreciates the value of hard work and the foundation of a strong family unit. After graduating from MAST Academy, he moved to Tallahassee where he attended the Florida State University on a service-based scholarship that recognized his over 1,000 recorded hours of community service he completed as a high school student. During his time at FSU, Christian devoted much of his time to service in the greater Tallahassee community through FSU’s scholarship program, Service Scholars. It was during his time in Tallahassee where Christian made civic engagement and political involvement his vocation.

Prior to his launch as a public affairs advisor, Christian served the Florida House of Representatives as communications director and policy advisor to House Democratic Leader Dan Gelber during his two-year leadership term. His knowledge of strategic communications, public opinion and message development allowed elected officials to effectively deliver their message to statewide media outlets and drive public opinion.

In 2008, Christian returned to Miami-Dade after working nearly five years in the Florida Legislature and launched his successful public affairs firm, EDGE Communications. Christian also joined SAVE, South Florida’s largest LGBT advocacy organization where he served two-years as its Chair. He is described by some of Florida’s top elected officials to be “hardworking, loyal and innovative,” “a very effective advocate,” “extremely ethical and a rare political professional who knows how to get things done in Florida.” In 2017, Christian was recognized nationally as one of the top 40 public affairs consultant’s in the country for his ethical leadership in the industry.

In 2015, Christian became active in the Miami Shores Village community when he helped Mayor Mac Glinn’s first campaign. Since then, Christian has been an active participant in the Village’s public policy discussions with Mayor Glinn and has taken part in a number of the Village’s community events. In addition to his volunteer work with the Mayor’s annual Gala committee, Christian and his family are part of the St. Rose of Lima church community.
